Most nonprofits with a quality website are eligible which makes it one of the easiest grants that a nonprofit can get.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The only problem is that the Google Ad Grant can be difficult to use thanks to the steep learning curve of the Google Ads platform. But even if you\u2019re already familiar with Google Ads, <a href=\"https:\/\/digitaltabby.com\/google-ad-grant-rules-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">grant accounts have their own set of rules and policies <\/a>that you have to comply with and they can end up making these accounts even more difficult to manage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">I saw that several nonprofits (including one of my local animal shelters) were having a lot of trouble maximizing their grant- I also saw that most traditional PPC agencies weren&#8217;t much better at getting results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">That\u2019s when I started <a href=\"https:\/\/digitaltabby.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Digital Tabby<\/a> and we\u2019re focused on helping nonprofits manage and maximize their Google Ad Grant without having to become an expert in Google Ads. Prior to starting Digital Tabby, I worked in nonprofit animal shelters and my agency is a combination of my years of nonprofit experience and digital marketing work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Today, we\u2019ll look at 10 key aspects of successfully managing and maximizing a Google Ad Grant. But this isn\u2019t just theory- we\u2019re going to connect these to real world case studies across three very different nonprofit organizations to really highlight the flexibility and functionality of the grant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-1-set-your-google-ad-grant-goals-and-work-backwards-from-there\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Set_Your_Google_Ad_Grant_Goals_And_Work_Backwards_From_There\"><\/span>1. Set Your Google Ad Grant Goals (And Work Backwards From There)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">One of the first things you need to figure out is <em>how <\/em>you want to use the Google Ad Grant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">You can get great results whether your goal is promoting cat adoption in a local area or increasing brand awareness at the international level and everything in between.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/manyhopes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Many Hopes<\/a> wanted to improve brand awareness internationally with a focus on major donor markets and countries where they do the majority of their children-focused humanitarian work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/simplified.com\/blog\/ai-writing\/write-killer-google-ads-descriptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9 Tips To Write Engaging Google Ads Descriptions + [Free AI Tool inside!]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Because we\u2019re focused on awareness, we\u2019re looking at keywords at the top of the awareness funnel like \u201cNGO in Africa\u201d, \u201cNGO in Kenya\u201d, or \u201cChildren\u2019s Charity\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/what-does-awareness-targeting-funnel.jpg\" alt=\"Set Your Google Ad Grant Goals\" style=\"width:534px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\" wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">This is very different from outcome based keyword targeting that would be focused on the bottom of the funnel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">For an example of this, we can turn to <a href=\"https:\/\/catcaresociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cat Care Society which adopts out cats to local residents<\/a>. In this case, we\u2019re focused on higher intent and specific keywords like \u201cadopt a cat\u201d or \u201ccat adoption near me\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Both approaches can work in a Google Ad Grant, but you need to make sure you understand your goal and then complete your keyword research with that specific goal in mind. I often see accounts that are trying to do everything all at once in their account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">In other words, they\u2019re failing to set the right Google Ad Grant goal from the start and their keyword research is suffering as a result.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-2-craft-compelling-ad-copy-that-gets-clicks\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Craft_Compelling_Ad_Copy_That_Gets_Clicks\"><\/span>2. Craft Compelling Ad Copy That Gets Clicks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">One of the Google Ad Grant requirements that gets a lot of attention is maintaining a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/grants\/answer\/9165968?hl=en#:~:text=without%20paying%20advertisers.-,Q.,5%25%20to%20comply%20with%20policy.\">5% minimum click through rate<\/a>. While this rule intimidates a lot of nonprofits, it should never be an issue as long as you\u2019re targeting the right keywords for your goal and crafting quality ad copy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">But what is quality ad copy?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Let\u2019s look at an example from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herobox.org\/\">HeroBox which is an organization that provides free care packages to deployed troops<\/a>. This ad (and its close variations) have an almost 25% clickthrough rate:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/hero-box-ad-example.png\" alt=\"hero box ad example\" style=\"width:487px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\" wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">We\u2019ve used a question to directly call out the audience we want to target (in this case active deployed troops) along with using a number (100%) to make the ad stand out even further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/simplified.com\/blog\/ai-writing\/create-catchy-google-ads-headlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 Tips To Create Google Ads Headlines<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">We\u2019re using keywords throughout the ad, but we also have compelling copy like \u201cWe Want You To Get A Custom Care Package\u201d which is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/ppmsc.03521\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classic military recruitment poster<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">All these elements come together to create an ad that\u2019s far more compelling than the keyword-stuffed ad that\u2019s so common in both paid and grant accounts- with the CTR results to prove it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/herbox-ctr-results.png\" alt=\"Herbox CTR Results\" style=\"width:500px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-3-conversion-tracking-is-essential-and-required\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Conversion_Tracking_Is_Essential_And_Required\"><\/span>3. Conversion Tracking Is Essential (And Required)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Even if nonprofits are able to get a hang of the Google Ads dashboard, they still have another complicated Google product to work with: Google Analytics 4.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/digitaltabby.com\/google-ad-grant-rules-policies\/#Rule_5_Must_Have_Conversion_Tracking_And_1_Conversion_Per_Month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Conversion tracking is required to stay compliant<\/a> with Google Ad Grant rules and while there are <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/12216424?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ways to set up conversion tracking within the Google Ad platform<\/a>, it\u2019s rarely robust enough to give you the data you need.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Instead, you need to turn to Google Analytics 4 (and sometimes Google Tag Manager) for proper tracking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Not only does this give you the ability to track conversions within your Google Ad Grant, but you can also compare marketing results across different channels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/simplified.com\/blog\/ai-writing\/ad-copy-generators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Top 7 Ad Copy Generators for Google, Facebook, and Instagram Ads<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">For example, we took Cat Care Society from an outdated Universal Analytics account to Google Analytics 4 where they\u2019re now able to track adoption applications, foster applications, and donations across 5 different categories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">This has allowed us to scale their Google Ad Grant to <em>over<\/em> $10,000 a month but also given the organization a much deeper understanding of what actually happens on their website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/scale-google-ad-grant.png\" alt=\"Scale Google ad grant\" style=\"width:578px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-4-use-the-right-bidding-strategy-to-fix-low-impressions\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Use_The_Right_Bidding_Strategy_To_Fix_Low_Impressions\"><\/span>4. Use The Right Bidding Strategy To Fix Low Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">One of the most common problems in Google Ad Grant accounts is low or even simply no impressions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Even seasoned PPC professionals will run into the problem of completing keyword research, creating great ad copy, and everything else that goes with an account build out only to end up with crickets when it\u2019s time to launch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/simplified.com\/blog\/social-media\/how-to-schedule-google-my-business-posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Schedule Google My Business Posts in Minutes!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">In the majority of accounts that I audit, low impressions are a result of an incorrect bidding strategy which usually means using Maximize Clicks or Manual CPC instead of conversion-based bidding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">If you\u2019re using a click-based bidding strategy (like the two just mentioned above) <a href=\"https:\/\/digitaltabby.com\/max-cpc-data-google-ad-grant\/\">then your max cost per click will be only $2.00<\/a> and you\u2019ll have a very hard time competing with grant accounts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">But if you use a conversion based bidding strategy, you\u2019ll be able to go far beyond the $2.00 cost per click cap. That means you\u2019ll start getting more impressions and better results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">All three of the nonprofits we\u2019ve looked at have Google Ad Grants with a cost per click over $2.00. Many Hopes and HeroBox both have an average cost per click that\u2019s a little below $15. Cat Care Society has a lower average cost per click but thanks to robust conversion tracking and conversion based bidding (in this case, Target CPA) we\u2019re able to get clicks as high as $50:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/cost-per-click-cat-example.png\" alt=\"Cost-per-click Cat Example\" style=\"width:574px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:38px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\" wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Using the wrong bidding strategy is exactly what happened to Many Hopes and while it worked for them for many months, they were slowly edged out as the average cost per click increased past their $2.00 bid cap. You can see that here and notice how the cost doesn\u2019t drop all at once but instead slowly drops:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/many-hopes-google-ad-grant-spend-decline-chart.png\" alt=\"many hopes google ad grant spend decline chart\" style=\"width:586px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\" wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Once we updated the bidding strategy (and applied the other tips we\u2019ve already covered) we were able to increase grant utilization by more than 20x:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/siteimages.simplified.com\/blog\/increase-grant-utilization-more-than-20x.png\" alt=\"increase grant utilization more than 20x\" style=\"width:554px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-5-report-on-results-and-make-improvements\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Report_On_Results_And_Make_Improvements\"><\/span>5. Report On Results And Make Improvements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">We started with setting a goal for our Google Ad Grant account so we know where we wanted to go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">But without clear and easy-to-understand reporting, we won\u2019t be able to tell <em>how far<\/em> we\u2019ve gone towards that goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/simplified.com\/blog\/marketing\/key-difference-between-marketing-and-advertising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marketing, Branding, Advertising: What&#8217;s The Difference?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">That\u2019s where monthly reporting comes in and we typically use a simple Looker Studio report to consolidate key information and visually report results. Digital Tabby\u2019s standard dashboard looks like this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" eplus-wrapper\">In this report, we can easily see how many conversions occurred, what type of conversions and the most common search phrases people use before they click an ad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Of course, you need more data than this to fully optimize and manage an account, but this report still gives you a quick overview of account activity and allows you to understand if you\u2019re on the right track or if a course correction is needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The important part is not <em>how <\/em>you report but instead it\u2019s making sure that you are reporting results and making improvements based on the data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-closing-thoughts\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Closing_Thoughts\"><\/span>Closing Thoughts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">While the Google Ad Grant offers tremendous potential for nonprofits, many struggle to fully maximize this resource due to the complexity of Google Ads and the extra rules that come with the grant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">However, as we&#8217;ve seen through real-world examples, success is achievable with the right approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">By focusing on goal-setting, ad creation, conversion tracking, bidding strategies, and regular reporting, even small nonprofits can transform their digital presence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Don&#8217;t let the learning curve discourage you \u2013 with persistence and the strategies outlined in this article, your organization can harness the full power of the Google Ad Grant to further your
